I think you should check the power adapter of your HD. If it shows 110-240V input, you can use it.

Thanks for quick reply. Wish such a label were attached. But all I have is a bare black box with a three pin a/c input on the back side. No power block.

No, it is not on the drive, I mean the adapter, this one.
This little guy can convert 110 or 220 input to 12V. You should check what is written on this.
