MacBook Pro/FCP question
Posted by Espeed77 on August 18, 2006 at 12:19 amIs the MacBook Pro 2.0 with 1G of RAM robust enough to edit a 2-hour film? Or should we just go for a MacPro? Granted, we know the MacPro is the better choice (ultimately), but can the MacBook Pro handle that kind of editing job?
It’s time for a new Mac, and fast! Thanks in advance for your input-

August 18, 2006 at 1:06 amIt will handle the edit. Question is the edit’s parameters. HD, DV or uncompressed? Effects, After Effects software compatibility with the Intel? Lot more that the edit. More info would help us understand your particular situation.
Hope this helps-

August 18, 2006 at 6:09 pmNot HD at this point (basic DV); no After Effects – just basic effects with FCP 4.5 with Rosetta (running with PowerPC software)… we just need to replace our current system, which is a G4 1.83 with 1G RAM and a string of external drives to finish our current project. Down the road we plan to upgrade everything (cameras, computers) to HD, but we have to wait a bit on that!
Thanks for your help!

August 18, 2006 at 6:26 pmIf you have no pressing needs for rendering and no plan to upgrade to FC Studio. Why not just get a cheap, used G4 to cut your feature? After you’re through, sell it.

August 18, 2006 at 7:09 pmI need something that will render faster than the G4 that we currently have (that’s our big problem) – at the rate we’re running now, it’s going to take forever… the MacBook Pro would work, then, right? The reason for the question is that we have a line on a great deal for a refurbished one that’s in our price range…
Thanks-

August 18, 2006 at 10:35 pmThe only problem that you’ll have is the MacBook Pro won’t run version 4.5 of FCP. It will only run 5.1. Apple Pro apps don’t run in rosetta. So unless your planning on upgrading your FCP you’d be better off looking for a used G5 tower.
