MacBook Pro Runs Slow
I’ve been editing happily with my desktop G5 for five years, until it developed a hard drive problem. I bought a MacBook Pro with the 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor and 4 GB of memory, which should be an upgrade for running FCP. I used the new laptop to complete a little 3-minute video in FCP with no problem, storing it on an external drive. However, now I have a 20-minute program and once I logged it into FCP, it is not allowing me to edit it in any way. I put the audio and video on the timeline and as soon as I move the cursor to do anything, I get the waiting sign for five minutes before I can make a move. Then FCP crashes. The only difference I have with my connection from my old method of editing with the G5 is to connect my external drive for storage and my tape deck through a hub because the laptop only has one Firewire input. What am I missing here to get FCP to operate?

Yes and no. That’s a single processor vs. the two in the original G5. Yes it’s a “core duo” but no necessarily faster than a desktop. Desktops will always be faster than a laptop.

You can’t use a FW hub. The tape deck should go through FW 400 and your storage should go through FW 800.
If you don’t have FW800 on your storage, connect the storage to the laptop and the camera to the storage.

You were exactly right. When I switched the cables around it worked perfectly! Thank you so much! I’m non-technical and couldn’t be enjoying the creativity of editing without your help and the Cow. The Cow has bailed me out many times!
