I have a Mac Pro with an internal RAID 0 striped across 3 drives. Whilst the Mac Pro is being repaired, I’d like to remove these drives and place them in a drive enclosure attached to my MacBook Pro via a single eSATA cable. Am I right in thinking this is as simple as slotting and plugging?

The RAID was created using Disk Utility.

The enclosure I’m poised to purchase is this Icy Dock 4-bay:

I’m using a Lacie eSATA ExpressCard, which supports port multiplier devices, but I’m wondering if that means it can act as a controller card for the Icy Dock.

    many thanks

PS (Thank you Shane, Walter et al for ensuring I bought the 17″ MacBook Pro.)

Software raided? So no RAID card? MIGHT be possible. But I haven’t tried it, or heard that it would…so I’d proceed with caution.

Many thanks for the quick reply. No, no RAID card. Is a RAID card really necessary for RAID 0? My thinking is that the internal linking inside the Icy Dock can’t be any more or less complicated than what’s inside a Mac Pro: just SATA connections, and that eSATA just continues that connectivity right into a MacBook Pro.

But as you suggest; who amongst us likes to assume?

    Ultimately, I’d like to have my 3 x 750GB internal RAID 0 mirrored by a 4 x 2TB external RAID 0. I think this document says it’s possible:

[Aldo Palumbo] “Is a RAID card really necessary for RAID 0? “

No…it is necessary for a “hardware RAID,” which is more stable than a software one. That’s all.

I agree in theory. It’s just doing it in PRACTICE that will be nerve wracking. I mean, what if it DOESN”T work? Might loose the info on the drives. Maybe someone has done this. No…wait, I have, sorta. I had 4 drives in an external box, raided as RAID 0. I got a new box, put them in there…worked fine. Both via eSATA. So it should work.
