My inclination, when purchasing one of the new 17 inch MacBook Pros for video editing, would be to “downgrade” from the standard internal hard drive to the 100gb 7200 RPM option, thus getting the faster drive and saving $100.

I have heard from some (perhaps unreliable) sources that this isn’t necessary, because the slower, bigger standard hard drive is fast enough, and that the added storage is worth the loss in speed.

Needless to say, I would never store video on the internal drive of a notebook computer. Therefore, this drive would only be responsible for the OS, the app, and the project file. I’ll be working mostly in DV, perhaps in HDV as time goes on.

    Thoughts?

I’d go with the larger capacity too. You’d likely see little difference in speed loading apps and saving files etc..
