    Hi guys,

Anyone out there doing any HD editing on a Macbook Pro? My spec is 2.6GHz core 2 duo, 4gb ram, FCS 2. I’m thinking of investing in Matrox MXO 2 but I’m now starting to hear it’s not up to capturing Pro-res through a notebook. That was going to be my preferred workflow – MXO 2 on my express 34 and G-tech G-Raid2 through my FW800. Maybe it’s not possible? But any suggestions are appreciated – and i know the obvious one is invest in a new mac pro but i’m exploring every avenue.

    Hi,

I got my MXO2 a couple of weeks ago and for me at the moment it does what
    it says on the tin.

My Macbook Pro is 2.33 with 2 gig of ram, upping to 3 soon.
I’ve captured digi in ProRes and on-lined with ease in FCP.
The HDMI monitor solution works very well on my 720p Panasonic.

As far as I know at the moment DVCproHD will work with your Mac and a MXO2,
anything else HD would be pushing your Macs limits.

    Danny.

I am doing a project in DVCPRO HD 720p60. I digitized from a 1400A via firewire using my macbook pro (core duo 2.8; 4gig ram) to a glyph drive via FW800.

worked beautifully. I can playback and edit without any dropped frames at all – even shuttling. I do not have any extra hardware.

When i work on my Mac Pro – i use the intensity pro to a HD monitor via HDMI – have not fully tested out this system yet though as i am just getting going.

    good luck

Thanks so far. Has anyone captured non-firewire into mac book pro using some kind of I/O?

I edit 108030p ProRes all day long on an MBP 2.4 with 4 gigs of RAM. I only capture via FW though, but it works great. I have a 17″ widescreen for my second monitor, and feed FW through an old deck with component out to a CRT. For storage I use a 2 drawer Firmtec with 1 TB RAID 0. This setup just works.

    Have a wonderful day.

I work in a variety HD formats using Aja’s IoHD for capture from any SD/HD/ video connection- that means basically anything you will find on a camera or deck for direct video playback -Svideo/ Component, Composite, HDSDI, SDI, and with some caveats even HDMI.

I am in the same boat as Gary. The ioHD is an awesome choice and really takes portable editing to a new level. In HD, you will want to work in ProRes or HQ. Get yourself a decent SATA array/enclosure to connect to your Express/34. If you need to use fw800, then you can get a fw800 express/34 card.

108030p ProRes through firewire? Is this HDV to pro-res at 1440×1080?

Thanks everyone for the advice. I’d looked into the ioHD and it is an animal. At half the price I was hoping the MXO2 would do something similar but it doesn’t look like it will – funny how it’s sold as portable and advertised working with MBP but doesn’t deliver on everything it states.

Yes, it’s 1440×1080 but the GOP format is gone.

    Hi Dan,

The MXO2 can capture ProRes 422 and ProRes 422 HQ SD on laptops. In HD capturing to ProRes on a laptop is not possible right now because of CPU limitations but playing back HD ProRes on a laptop is no problem.

You might want to take a look at our FAQ to get all the info you need.

    Chris,

I am capturing 1080 30p ProRes on my laptop as I type, in real time, via FireWire. Do it almost every day.

    Have a wonderful day.
