macbook pro hard drive speed
I’ve searched the forums for this with no luck – I’ve found lots of advice on RAM, but not on hard drive speed.
Basically I’m thinking of getting a macbook pro to work on away from the office, on weekends etc. and I was wondering if the hard drive speed (ie 5400 or 7200) will make a difference to the overall speed of AE, given that I will be working from video assets that will be on a faster external hard drive? Only my AE project files will be on the macbook hard drive.
Basically I’m trying to sneak the budget under

Well, when rendering, AE accesses a frame from disk, performs computations (to render), performs more computations (to compress), then writes that frame to disk.
Basically. The way to see how much time this takes (sort of) is to open the render details when rendering.The fewer computations that have to be done, the more important drive speed becomes. This explains why editing apps can take advantage of faster drives when there’s no rendering (computation) to be done.
So you see, it depends on the project and the amount of computation that has to be done. If you’re doing a lot of projects that have very little computation, then hard drive speed has a greater impact on your overall rendering times as you access frames and write to disk.
However, most of us won’t see a big difference between 5400 and 7200 drives in an AE project. Video editing apps yes, but not AE.
