I’m in the market for a used Macbook Pro that I want to run FCS on. Just trying to figure out if there are any specs or particular models that I should look for. Like what graphics card works best with FCP? Is there a difference if I try to output to an external monitor? I’ve seen some nice i7 core 17″ models on Apple’s refurbished site, but not sure if that’s the best way to go. One of you experienced users may tell me that last year’s model is better because it’s got the XXYY chipset.

Thanks for any advice you can offer.

The fastest comp. you can afford is usually the answer here…

I have a 17″ i7 – works really well with FCS. It replaced an old 17″ Core duo 2.16 model which also worked well with FCS.

Stick with the 17″ models as they are the only ones to include an expresscard slot – very useful for adding esata / firewire, etc. You will also find he new i7 don’t have a native FW400 port, so will need either an adapter or an expresscard with FW400 if you need to use older kit with it.

Max out your ram as well.

Its a great machine that i use to edit broadcast commercials whilst on the road!

Any MacBook Pro with a dedicated external FW800 harddrive will edit most HD formats easily.
Get 7200 RPM system drive at least. ( or SSD)

If you want to have an option to expand with a SDI/HDMI/Component I/O like the Matrox MXO2, then you’re only option is a MacBook Pro 17 ”

Thanks for all the great advice. I’ve been keeping an eye on craigslist and I think I may have found a good deal.
