Yesterday, working perfectly, this morning, black screen. It makes the startup noise but nothing else. And the extra monitor hooked up via DVI is black too. Could it be a battery issue? The machine is about 2 years old.

    Have a wonderful day.

Sounds like a graphics card failure.

Sounds like the dreaded Nvidia failure to me. I just had that happen to mine and had to take it in to Apple. Happy ending for me as I walked out with a brand new MBP however.

Amen to that. I love my MBPs but, I have had some kind of issue with everyone I have owned.

    Hi there,

Might be what happened to me a few months ago.

I had been living happily with my MacBook Pro for about 2 years (interesting coincidence: does this verify a programmed life span?) and Boom… as if I had no battery left, though I was plugged in… Black screen, starting up noise the first couple of times then lifeless.

Now, a major detail, have you experienced trouble with your battery?

Mine was basically slowly dying the previous few months: overused it probably (I rarely took it out even while being plugged in… silly I guess). Anyway, as a last hope I took the battery out, pressed ON and my Mac was reborn!!!

Hope this is your case. Let me know.

I took it to the Apple Store, and they sent it off to the repair shop, they suspect a bad chip or two. It’s gonna be about $310 to fix it.

    Have a wonderful day.

    Hi Chris,
    Don’t worry about.
There is an Apple program to replace the Graphic cards of some 2007 MBP. ven with warranty over:

    https://support.apple.com/kb/TS2377

They just replace it for me last week in Bangkok.
    Cheers,
    rafael

Well, mine was out of warantee, I’ve already forked over 310 bucks.

    Have a wonderful day.

Rafael is saying it should be covered even if it is out of warranty as this was labeled as bad h/w. Here is the Apple notice. There are many discussions of this issue on Apple’s support forums.
