I’ve got a 2010 Macbook Pro with an i7 processor, 8GB RAM and an nVidia card. CS5 worked great on it, but CS5.5 is a different story. I can create projects, import footage, save, and reopen, but when I add a few items to the timeline, save, and close the project or program, the problems begin. Premiere crashes every time I attempt to reopen the project. I’ve tried using different drives, different types of footage, logging in as administrator, and a complete reinstall. No success.

I informed Adobe tech support of the problem and uploaded crash logs from the program and OS X for them to view. The really annoying thing is that they’ve promised twice to call me back in a few days after bumping up the problem to a higher level of tech support, but failed to do so.

Any ideas? I’m still able to use CS5 on this machine but it’s extremely annoying that 5.5 is completely useless to me.

There could be an issue related to having CS5 and CS5.5 on the same machine.

Go to the Disk Permissions and repair them to see if that makes any difference.

Thanks for the suggestion, Jon. I had actually already tried repairing disc permissions. No success. I’ll try removing CS5 once I’ve completed my current project.

Yes, it’s Premiere CS5.5 that is crashing. I don’t have CS4 on this machine, only CS5 and 5.5 The weird part is, it only happens after I’ve added a few items to the timeline (anything – stills, video, or audio) then saved, and closed the project/program. The next time I attempt to load the project it crashes Premiere. I can open the project to my heart’s content as long as there is nothing on the timeline. CS5 still works fine.

Sounds like a corrupt installation of it.

I would suggest you deactivate CS5 via a launched app. Uninstall CS5. Run the Adobe Cleaner Tool (downloadable online) to perhaps uninstall and deactivate CS5 and CS5.5 together. It will remove all the relevant files and registries.

    Then reboot and install CS5.5

I have done this many times across Mac systems and it is the best way to remove older versions and install new ones. 🙂

Thanks again for the suggestion, Jon. Unfortunately it didn’t work. Premiere CS 5.5 still crashes when I attempt to open saved projects that have clips on the timeline. Still no return call from Adobe tech support either, despite several promises from them to do so. Very disappointing.

Got the solution from Chad Baker at Adobe technical support. I had tried the GPU “hack” with CS5 (but not CS 5.5). Evidently, just having the CUDA extensions and preference panel installed in OS X were causing problems. I removed them and did a reinstall of the OS. Voila, problem fixed.

Glad that Chad was able to get this sorted out for you, Bob.

I’d love to know the solution that fixed this! I’m actually running cs 5.5 on a new MacBook Pro and It was working fine. Now, all of a sudden, whenever I use AE, PS, and Premiere, then quit the program, it crashes my machine to a light blue screen and becomes unresponsive. I then have to force close it by doing cmd-opt-ctrl-delete and then it’ll shut down. Now, sometimes it won’t happen with photoshop but lately it’s almost every time with PR and AE.

    Any help?
