Macbook Pro 2.4 or 2.5?
Posted by Andrey Chernyshev on May 25, 2008 at 12:44 amHi all,
I’m about to purchase Macbook Pro to work with FCS 2 and I’m wondering if it worth to pay $500 more for 2.5 GHz. I use all FCS’s applications.
Thanks a lot!Andrey Tchernyshev

May 25, 2008 at 1:02 amI don’t consider 100Mhz difference per core a bid deal. If it is worth it for you, it would probably be the memory on the graphics card. I haven’t seen any numbers on how big of a performance difference you’d see with 512MB of video memory compared to 256MB. It’s still the same graphics processor. I would think the only difference would be the length of a RAM preview in motion. I don’t think you’d see a performance difference otherwise.
So I don’t think it’s worth the $500. I’d rather buy the 2.4 and then when a new macbook pro comes out, but the new one by selling yours and spending $400 more for the new one.

May 25, 2008 at 5:42 amThat $500 is not for the processor speed bump at all, but rather for the 500MB video card as opposed to the 256MB.
If, as you say, you use all of the FCS applications, you are paying the $500 to be able to use Motion and Color with some degree of usability. A 256MB card is just not enough to allow Motion and Color to shine. $500 well spent, IMO.
