Macbook Pro 15 vs 17 inch for FCP editing
Hi all,
I’m trying to decide between a Macbook Pro 15 inch and 17 inch to replace my previous laptop, which was 15 inch. I will be using it partly to edit films and videos in Final Cut. I did edit in FCP on my old laptop, but I’m wondering if I would benefit from the bigger screen, both during the editing, and to show work to potential clients. Have any of you had experience on these different sized screens? How much of a difference does the extra space make when working in Final Cut specifically? The computer stays mostly at my desk, but I would still like to be able to bring it with me on projects/locations, when I travel, on planes, etc. How is the trade off between screen size and portability? For a system with the same specs, the 17 inch hi-res matte screen is about $180 more than the 15 inch hi-res matte.Thanks for any feedback!

a bigger screen is always nicer.
but the express34 slot that the 17″ has can be huge for editors, a second FW port, eSata or for a true external display, to me it is a no brainer. Only draw back is the extra weight which doesn’t seem to be a concern, that and the extra $$

If you can afford the upgrade, then get the larger screen.
I have a large-screen iMac, and I wish I had a separate monitor for logging and bin purposes.
I recommend the larger screen, for sure.

Honestly I am only beginning to edit, but I have found myself on a budget so I bought a 13″ MacBook Pro, if you know your workflow and get the right equipment along with it you won’t see any setbacks. What I did was got the fastest 13″ MacBook Pro then got 3 HDD’s that I had running at 7200 rpm, then got my 24″ LED Cinema Display. I have not had any problems yet and when I’m on the go I can use my 13′ with ease.
Then again I’m not the next Motion Picture hit editor.
You just need to know what you will be working on and what footage you use.
