I can only reply (as per earlier threads) that I have run 5.1 on a Mac Mini (CoreDUO 1.66 and Intel Integrated gfx a la the MacBook) and it does run. However, it seems sluggish in use (particularly with Motion and DVDSP) probably due to the lack of PCI graphics. I also only have 512Mb of RAM on my system – so that probably doesn’t help.

Be nice to hear from a Blackbook owner with 2Mb of RAM….

[Ben Holmes] “However, it seems sluggish in use (particularly with Motion and DVDSP)”

Motion needs a desktop machine to run efficiently and with a powerful graphics card. Really, FCP will run the best on a laptop of all the Studio apps.

[walter biscardi] “Motion needs a desktop machine to run efficiently and with a powerful graphics card”

Absolutely – I’m not recommending either MB or MM as a motion machine. I only mentioned it because the Apple KB article seemed to suggest to some that it would not work at all, and I have found it to be completely stable, if slow. As I have said before, I have used the Mini to run renders and builds for DVDSP, Motion and Compressor, so I could continue to work on my other system/s at home. And before anyone asks, we have several licences for FCS, one of which is spare at the moment. I’ll probably have to take it off the Mini when we buy a Quad next month (so I can continue to run all our plug-ins for the foreseeable future).

FCS does (as Walter suggests) run best of all, but undoubtably needs more RAM than my Mini has / would have if I used it regularly for this.

Anders, You’ll be disappointed… Hey, if Apple is saying no… what more really should you need? Since it will install, and run, I’d not think that running sluggishly is going to make you very happy… Save your pennies for a MBP… there’s the real answer.

But I have been waiting for a 12″ powerbook and I end up with a macbook that’s not suitable for fcp. Oh well, my work mac has a 30″ + 23″ lcd and thats the one I do all my work on. It’s just convenient if I could do some fcp work on my macbook, if my main mac gets a total crash

oh well. I guess I will buy the macbook anyway.. Cause I don’t want you boring guys to let me down 🙂

Well, Anders, is there really any other way to be?

From what I have seen, the MBP will easily match a dual G5 with an ATI x800 in it and that is close to the best video you can get right now. When the Intel-based workstations ship I am sure that will change.

From what I’ve read FCP runs very well on the Macbook as long as you don’t need any RT out of Motion.
