    Hi.

    Has anyone one tried to run FCP on the new MacBook (not pro)? How does it perform?

    I’m considering purchasing either a MacBook or a used PowerBook G4 to replace my iMac G5 as I require a portable system. Which should be the best choice?

    Best regards, Rasmus Nielsen.

    Definitely would not go with and older model G4 now with the new machines out there. Of course FCP will run on the MacBook, though renders will be slower than if you had the Pro.

    Basically you just have to determine your workflow. Does your remote work require fast turnarounds where faster renders will be needed? Or do you have the luxury of plenty of time to allow the MacBook to render?

    If I needed the quick turnarounds, then I would definitely go for a MacBook Pro over a used G4 or the regular MacBook. If renders are not a problem, then go with the MacBook.

    I used to run FCP 3 on an old iBook and it worked great in the field. I would capture to it and make quick rough edits out there and then come back to our main desktop editing workstations to finish. It was slow as a dog to render, but that didn’t matter in my situation, I just needed to do straight cuts so it worked fine.

    Officially, Apple doesn’t say it works or not. The minimum system requirements for Final Cut Studio say:

    >>>>Macintosh computer with 867MHz or faster PowerPC G4, PowerPC G5, or Intel Core Duo processor;
    HD features require 1GHz or faster single or dual processors (authoring HD DVDs requires a PowerPC G5 or Intel Core Duo processor)
    512MB of RAM; HD features require 1GB of RAM or more (2GB recommended)
    Display with 1024-by-768 or higher resolution
    AGP or PCI-E Quartz Extreme graphics card<<<< The MacBooks don't have a Quartz Extreme level graphics card, so Motion probably won't work, but FCP should. Ed

    I would stay away from the MacBook and splurge on a macbook Pro 17″. If you truly need a portable editor, this is the one for you, unless you need any application that is not yet universal. Then I would suggest a powerbook G4.
