After Effects CS4 lets other software, like QuickTime, install export commands in the File > Export menu. The AVI export that you see there is installed there by QuickTime.
In general, we recommend that you use the native export path throught the render queue. But, if the QuickTime exporters are providing something through their menu commands that you can’t get through the render queue, then you can go ahead and use them.
More information is here:
“Rendering and exporting overview” (CS4)
“Rendering and exporting overview” (CS5)
(Because Apple doesn’t provide a 64-bit QuickTime, QuickTime can’t install exporters in the File > Export menu in After Effects CS5.)
