  • Mac to pc project, pc won’t import footage

    Hi,

I created a AE project on a mac. The names of the Photoshop-footage contains some “illegal” (in pc-land) characters like \ and !

Now a collegue needs to open the AE-project on a pc, but it won’t import the footage.

Any ideas on how to tackle this?

I tried to rename the offending Photoshop-footage. Then when I openend the project on my mac, it would’nt see the footage unless I reconnnected it layer by layer. And there’s 433 layers in this project.

Also I looked for a way in AE to re-save the footage and change the footage-names in the process. But I couldn’t find this option.

All suggestions are more than welcome!

There are a number of utilities which allow mac files to be recognized on a PC. They might help. Im not sure if they work through AE. MacDisk and MacOpener come to mind.

In general though, it’s probably best to use web-safe naming conventions for files. We live in a cross platform – cross media – cross program world.

I would probably rename the footage files on the mac first and reconnect them before moving it over to the pc. You shouldn’t have to reconnect every layer though, close the project and rename the offending files, when you open it might find them anyway (recently OSX has been uncannily good at finding renamed files, useful in this case but kind of scary too). If they are unconnected double click on one of the sources in the project window (don’t cmd+H) point to the renamed psd and all the layers should reconnect at once.
Best of luck, I have this problem a lot and want to whip our Mac-Bred animators!!

PS if you’re using the collect option make sure all the bins in your project window have legal names too as after effects will mimic that structure when it collects the files.
