I need to upgrade my Mac dustbin as it’s starting to play up, lagging and constantly quitting out of Media Composer. I’m looking at the <b style=”font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; -webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%;”>MAC STUDIO M1 MAX 10-CORE (2022) can I ask if anyone here would recommend this? I’d love to buy a new Mac tower, but I don’t have the budget for it. I’m going to be remote editing, remotely in to a suite, as well as cutting films from home, from mainly a Sony A7 mk 3 cameras.

Any advice would be very much appreciated.

    Hey Dan,

The MAC STUDIO M1 MAX (2022)
Is on the Qualified Apple Mac Systems for Media Composer Sept 2024:

    And screenshot below.

    Depending on your budget:

Question is whether Avid will certify the latest Mac Mini in the near future?
It comes with Apple M4 Pro chip with 14‑core CPU, 20‑core GPU, 16-core Neural Engine, 64GB unified memory, 2TB SSD storage, 10 Gigabit Ethernet.
Three Thunderbolt 5 ports, HDMI port, two USB‑C ports, headphone jack>

And that this might give you more bang for the money.
They have in the past certified the Mac Mini ’23.

I’ve just recently signed up to an Avid MC Ultimate subscription.
In discussions with my supplier, they suggested that currently PC is a better platform than the latest Mac systems. Apple tend to make “sudden” changes to their OS. This makes it more difficult for software companies to keep their software up to date and stable.

Not making a judgement, except that if you go with a new Apple, don’t rush to update the OS.

    Hope that this helps?

Thanks very much Mads, that is very helpful indeed. I think I’ll go with that, I use MC with a PC at work, but trust Macs more in general.

    Thanks again for your reply,

    Dan

I agree with Mads that PCs tend to be more reliable for Avid but do not back it up 100 percent. I have an M2 Max running Media Composer for the last 1.5 years without any problems. The only problem we had was connecting the third display, which is an LG TV. The problem was that part of the interface was on the TV, and as it was off at that time, we didn’t understand what happened at first.

    Thanks for the reply Devrim.

Can I ask if you think it’s worth getting the M2 or do you think the M1 would do the job. know it’s always best to get more initially, I just wondered if you felt it was more future proof.,

It is always good to buy the latest especially if you are planning to use it for a long time. You should consider the price of the machines. If that is not huge always go for a new one. Of course, specs are important too. There is an M1 Ultra with 64 GB RAM and an M2 Max with 32 GB RAM at the office. I can definitely say that the M1 Ultra works more efficiently. If you are going to use it for 10 years and earn money from it, it will probably earn its money in 1 year maybe 2 years max. So if there is a 200 USD price difference I would buy the expensive one. And RAM is very important in the long run, always remember that.

Of late Avid has been updating to Apples tech a little quicker than the past.

Not sure if the M4 is approved yet but I am confident it will be.

Also, most of us have broken that rule anyways time to time 🙂
