Hey guys, i’ve been working on an iBook for a while and am looking to upgrade to a new desktop machine. I’m looking at a used G5 tower, but if that doesnt work out i’m considering possibly a refurb G5 iMac or maybe even a mini if worse comes to worse. any thoughts on minimum specs for running AE effectively? My other work is primarily print and web so its the usual PS/illustrator/flash type stuff. thanks.

AE and Photoshop both have the same mantra where system specs are concerned: more is better.

Processor speed, RAM, and video card are your three main concerns.

But as always, whether or not you need a speed demon machine is dependent on what type of work you’re doing. If you’re just doing simple animations, you can get by with an iMac. But if you spend a lot of time in 3D, pre-comping, particles, or other intense effects, you’re going to want the beefy hardware.

Here’s a link to AE7’s system requirements. I suggest you lean towards the recommended specs as far as you can go.
