Hi. An associate of mine captured some footage of a shoot to his iMac and transferred the .mov files to a disc for me to import into Vegas.

Unfortunately, when I try to play them in Vegas, all I get is sound, even though I have the latest version of Quicktime on my box. I’m assuming that the Mac version of the codec is different from the Windows version — so does anyone know of a workaround short of my associate having to convert all of the footage (I’m not sure he even can)?

I’m assuming there must be a way for me to actually see this footage. Help!

Quicktime MOV is a wrapper not a codec so what you need to do is find out which codec was used for these files. Try opening the file in the Quicktime player and press Ctrl+I to bring up the Movie Inspector. Look at the Format: field and this should tell you which codec you need. Then your next problem is finding that codec for Windows.

It should play, but depending on the codec used, it obviously won’t. Quicktime isn’t a codec, it’s a wrapper around a codec. Look at the “About this movie’ properties, learn the codec, report back. There might be a third party decoder.

As john said…try viewing which codec comprises this quicktime
format and more than likely you can grab a download of which
codec is missing. If any of this is not possible, you just
need to ask your supplier what they used.

Thanks, guys. I’ve learned something new and that makes it a good day. I’ll check it out as you’ve suggested.
