[JeremyG] “Besides, when I upgrade my Dual 2 G5 to a 3 gig quad, I’m sure I’ll notice the speed bump.”

About 1-2% on some pro apps, according to the independent benchmarks! Enjoy. Take a look at the figures before you buy – I did.

I know what marketing hype is, Jeremy. That doesn’t mean a) I have to like it and b) that it’s ok. Sooner or later, Apple may trip over another line. Remember those ‘world’s fastest’ ads that Apple had to withdraw? As an adult I can make an informed decision about this – that’s what this thread’s about, right? I just don’t want less experienced Mac purchasers to fall down the rabbit hole. What’s wrong with that?

Depends on the kind of apps you use 😉

(OK, this is kind of OT)

CineBench is giving me a CPU score of 1340, the highest one I’ve ever seen (and we have quite a few powerful PCs in our labs too). If you are working in 3D-animation with Cinema4D, this box is leaving everything else in the dust!

Which is a clear sign of the potential Apple has yet to explore…

Nope, just the software backbone to run your workstation.

Nothing at all, but you mean to tell me that you would advise a new mac purchaser to buy a used dual 2.0 G5 because someone claimed that it runs only 1-2% slower than a MacPro? First, I’d check your sources and second I’m willing to wager that the MacPro would beat my dual 2.0 in just about everything. I’m not talking benchmarks I’m talking about real life editing/compositing and rendering.

    Ok, guys….

I have to get into this one.

First, Apple is a company that prides themselves on quality, not quantity. That is commendable is today’s society. Next, you are comparing and expecting the new MacPro to be the fastest and most awesome computer on the market. It was Apple desicion to release the computers before releasing OS 10.5 Leopard. Yes, the machines are 64-bit and OS 10.4 is 32-bit… So, given all that there is at the moment. You really can’t compare the new MacPros until Leopard is released and the next version of FCP is released.

If you look carefully, FCP can STILL only use 2.5 gig of RAM. Why not more? I can’t answer that BUT Apple is doing its best to compete in a market that is dominated by PC and Avids. Let’s not compare apples to oranges…. Let’s wait until leopard comes about and see what advances in technology have been made. For now, I have to purchase a new system and it would be very stupid not to get the latest and best that Apple has to offer. You have to look toward the future when you talk about these things.

No – where exactly did I do that? What article says that? Why don’t you take a look at it. Jeez. Supervideo (if that IS his real name) asked if FCP takes advantage of all 4 processors in a Mac Pro. At the moment, it appears not.

If you were to ask – as others have here – whether it’s worth upgrading from a Quad G5 to a Mac Pro at the moment, again INDEPENDENT benchmarks from a number of sources, running renders on FCP say not. You know, it seems like every time I say anything like this on this forum, I get jumped on. If you just want a lot of ‘yes please’ comments every time Apple brings out new kit, then fine – Don’t read my opinions, or just ignore them. But this is about real-world performance on current systems, with current software, from people seeking to make professional buying decisions NOW. Of course the decision is a different one in 6 months or 12 or 24. It always is. If you have a dual 2.0 G5, and you want a faster computer, get one.

I don’t really care what you do yourself – it’s your decision at the end of the day. Eventually, when they release a new version of FCP running on a new OS with even newer hardware, I expect it’ll be quicker than a Quad G5. The advice of a number of different experts who have tested the Mac Pro is that it is not for FCP YET – and if I read ONE article from anyone saying different, I will change my mind.

    That’s all.
