getting ready to purchase a new mac so that I can update C4D and AE to 64bit. Originally, I was planning to get an 8 core mac pro, but heard some interesting benchmark comparisons between the mac pro and the quad core imac i7. The imac is obviously a lot cheaper, but there are also obvious I/O and expansion upgrade advantages on the mac pro.
Any feedback on the new imacs and this workflow and operating in 64 bit? Anyone?

I have the iMac Quad-core i7, 16 GB RAM, and use it with all the 64-bit Adobe CS5 software and C4D. It works flawlessly. My one and only complaint is that I cannot use an NVIDIA card. Hope that helps.

You might want to look at the Cinebench scores for the iMacs vs. the Mac Pros. For raw rendering power you’ll probably see appreciably faster renders as you throw more cores at it. In general, 8 cores will be faster than 4, and 12 cores will be faster than 8. But you’ll be paying for those cores.
