Mac Pro Quad Core Intel Xeon
Hello out there…
I have a question for any who might be able to shed light on this problem. Apple have just sent me this new Mac Pro 2.8 Quad Core Intel Xeon desk top, it has 16 gbs of memory in it. This issue I am having is this, it is much slower that my old 2 2.66 Duel core processor Mac Pro that I had with 5 gbs of memory.
I am working with these 30 min. 1080p uncut video clips, nothing special has been done to these clips what so ever, just a little crop and that’s it. The problem it what I go to render one of the clips its about an hr and 15 to doso. If I want a reference mov to bring into compressor that will take about an hr and half to export.Has anybody out there run into the same issue with a single processor verses a duel processor?

If you were editing/rendering the same material on the older model, then something is wrong with the newer model.

That tells us the length, the frame size, and the that it’s progressive frames, but you have left out the information about the codec, which is much more important.
Most important of all, have you update both the OS and FCP to the point at which Apple Software Update says: “all software is up to date?”

And, have you updated the OS and FCP as far as you can go?
Though it doesn’t get at the root of your original post, about this machine being slower, try going to Sequence>>Settings and changing the Compressor dropdoan menu to ProRes from XDCam, and see if that doesn’t make your entire editing process, including rendering, go much, much faster.

Yes I sure have, the whole computer is up to date… I will give the ProRes option at try. Is it possible that this computer just works this way??? Just seems wired that a brand new comp would be this slow with 16gbs of memory…

Yes Jesse, I agree with you. Sounds like something isn’t right. I’d contact Apple about it, cuz all things being equal, you could have gotten a dud or a lemon.

Was the old machine an 8 Core Mac (8 Processors) and the new one a 4 core Mac (4 Processors)? Not quite sure from your posting. If this is the case, this is most likely the reason.

Hey Warren,
Thanks for getting back to me. The old mac was a two 2.66 duel core processor system. So by jumping down to a single processor quad core you will definitely notice a big difference then? Thanks for any help

If you go from a 4 processor machine to an 8 processor machine, then yes.
