Mac Pro GPU/Memory/CPU/etc Expandability
Posted by Jacob Brown on June 10, 2013 at 8:59 pmWhy does everyone assume that none of these things are expandable/changeable?
If you look at https://www.apple.com/mac-pro/ there is a very prominent “unlock” button that allows the chases to open and slide off.
It’s definitely not a sealed case. And why leave it unsealed unless owners have a reason to open it.
Everything seems to be attached and held in with screws. The animation actually shows the memory units sliding in and out.
Am I wrong?

June 10, 2013 at 9:01 pmNo. From the drawings it looks like at least RAM and perhaps PCIe storage is replaceable.
Not sure of what else will be, though.

June 10, 2013 at 9:06 pmDidn’t the keynote specifically state that it was only expandable externally?

June 10, 2013 at 9:07 pmNo it didn’t say ONLY. If you watch the animation the RAM is clearly upgradeable at least

June 10, 2013 at 9:07 pmLooks like ram and flash drive are replaceable. CPU and GPUs face inwards so unlikely.

June 10, 2013 at 9:14 pmI love it – probably the most powerful workstation to date, at least twice as powerful as anything any of us have ever used (unless you’re running a 12 core tower with dual K6000’s) and everyone is worried about upgrading. This thing is a beast, what could anyone possibly do to upgrade it? There’s nothing currently on the market that could make it any better/faster…

Why? Unscrew it, take it out, put in a new one.

Hey, I like to save a few bucks not maxing out the ram through Apple, but buying from Crucial.

Looks like you’ll be able to do that…

There isn’t? It’s using the fastest possible CPU? The fastest possible GPUs? Will they be the fastest next year? The year after that? Yes, this kills the 2010-era Mac Pros that Apple is currently selling but that’s not saying much. I’m sure there are people that need more power today than what the new Mac Pro offers (like Resolve users that have 3 or more GPUs in their rigs) and I’m sure in 12 months that number will increase. And in 24 months the number will be even bigger.
The machine is a lot of power in a very small space but it’s certainly not the end all, be all of machines.
