Hello! I was not sure which forum topic I should post this under… but here it goes.

I am looking to create a high end editing suite. I currently have a Mac Pro 2x3GHz Dual-Core Xeon with 8GB of RAM and 2TB HD space. I use a 30″ Apple Cinema Display, and a 37″ Samsung TV. I am looking to upgrade to the new Mac Pro, but other than that I am wondering what kind of set up would be plausible for a full editing suite.

I am looking to edit EX1 footage and 5D MK II footage. I am probably going to get more into shooting and editing with the Canon 5D. I would love a broadcast monitor and raid, but I just don’t know where to start.

I’td be great if someone could list for me a high-end editing suite revolving around Final Cut Studio.

    Thanks!

The machine you have is fine…no need to upgrade. Just get a Capture Card…AJA, Decklink, Matrox, MOTU…up to you. I like the Matrox MXO3 and the AJA Kona 3. ON my own system I have the MXO2.

    RAIDS? Caldigit, MaxxDigital EVO, iStoragePro…

    Broadcast Monitor: Flanders Scientific.

    [Shane Ross] “Matrox MXO3”
Do you know something that the rest of us don’t, or at least what I don’t.

Thanks a lot! I was looking at the Kona 3, and I’ll probably go with that. Is there anything else that would be useful?

A good sized desk, comfy chairs for your clients, tidy cabling… all the non-technical stuff is important too.

Also what about speakers and some decent headphones? Might you need a mic for recording voice-overs/guide tracks?

I love the Kona 3, but also look at the AJA Kona LHi. Half the price and most of the features of the Kona 3.

For an edit console, look at Anthro. We have their Fit Consoles in our suites.

For hard drive RAIDs look at Maxx Digital, Small Tree, Dulce and Sonnet.

As Shane mentioned, Flanders Scientific for a real color reference monitor. If you’re getting the Kona board, put a professional monitor in there as well.

The MXO2 is better than the LHi. It has two SDI outputs to the LHi’s one. The MXO2 can output 16 channels of embedded audio, the LHi can only do 8. The MXO2 can work on a laptop via Express34, the LHi is tower only. The MXO2 is a break out box…with the LHi you need to purchase that separately.

Thanks again for all the suggestions.

    Just some questions…

How will using a capture card differentiate from simply importing footage straight from the Canon 5D or EX1 straight into Final Cut Pro?

Also, if I get the Kona3, will I also need to get the K3-box? It’s not that expensive so it wouldn’t be a problem if it helps.

It won’t. Those are tapeless formats, no need for a capture card to capture. BUT, you need one to get a signal out to a broadcast monitor…you need one to output to tape. You’ll need one to capture tape formats, to upconvert SD to HD. An HD capture card is part of a high end bay.

If you won’t be capturing from tape much, or outputting to tape like ever, then look at the MXO2 Mini, or Decklink Intensity Pro…for output to the HD monitor. Both will capture from tape too…the MXO2 mini lacks deck control though.
