    Hello!

I’ve had three Panasonic DVCPRO 255 decks develop bad firewire option cards since being connected to a Mac Pro. Has anyone else experienced or heard of this before?

I’m highly suspect of the Mac Pros since we have dozens of G5s that we use with our 255 decks and have never had a problem. In three weeks, we’ve lost three decks to bad firewire option cards, all of which were fine until being connected to a Mac Pro, and not the same Mac Pro.

    Thanks in advance,

    Jen

That’s because the firewire option cards in your DVCPRO decks do not have a surge protection circuit on them. Most firewire devices do, but some do not, like your Panasonic decks. Firewire ports all send power thru them for devices that need power to run. Yours doesn’t need this power and this is shorting out your cards.

The only real protection is to shut down your computer and switch off the deck, connect them, and then switch both of them on again. This is an old issue that has never really been dealt with at Panasonic.
