  • Mac Mini as Conversion Machine– RAM & Cores matter?

A project has more than 4TB of DSLR clips in a 1080 mp4 codec. Will be converting to ProRes HQ for editing, using the latest Compressor.

I plan to get a Mac Mini for the constant demanding needs of conversion during the project, reading from one external and writing to another.

I’m guessing the quad-core i7 is better for this than the dual-core i5.
But does RAM matter? Will 4GB do, or will 8 or 16 make a difference?

Processor is all that matters. More RAM will help with running more APPS at once.

you might want to take a look at Resolve, too.
my experience with compressor (not the latest version) is that it falls over if you load too many clips at once.

we did an entire films worth of transcoding on Resolve in one go a few months back.

I didn’t find direct info that Resolve can start with the Lumix GH3’s mp4 mov files; in the articles and posts I found most users start with raw and higher-end acquisition clips. Anyway, Resolve Lite is free so I’ll try it!

These days with Compressor, I throw in batches of 50-75 clips at a time. The latest version, plus a new MBPRO w/ 2.8 GHz Intel Core i7 and 2 external USB3 RAID-0, I have happily not experienced the unacceptable freezing and crashing that plagued me on the previous system.
