    Hi Dave,
Get your lap-top with a 5.400 RPM HD. You don’t need at all 7.200 and you will save batteries.
For the external HDs, have a look to the Lacie Little Big Disk Quad.
I’ve just bought two. 500GB and you can put it in your pocket. In FW mode can be fed from the lap-top and being 5.400 RPM do not need much power. And really fast because is Raid 0. You can plug it by eSATA and USB as well.

I just got the Sony PMW EX1,took a few shots with it and tried transfering the clips to my Mac i book. The SXS cards are seen as two seperate drives by the i book, the contents are also seen, however the clip browsing software provided with the camera is not working with my i book. When I try to open the clip browsing application I get the following message- “YOU CANNOT OPEN THE APPLICATION XDCAM EX CLIP BROWSER BECAUSE IT IS NOT SUPPORTED ON THIS SYSTEM”. Mac i book is with the motorola processor and the software is updated to the latest version. Please help out! thanks best vinod

ClipBrowser will not run on PPC chip used in iBook. You need an Intel processor for that.

You can use the XDCAM transfer tool though. You should update it to the latest version 2.7. You’ll also need at least Final Cut Pro 6.0.2 and Quicktime 7.3.1

I’d suggest you consider getting a MacBookPro. It’s ExpressCard Slot makes inputing fast and easy.
