    I’ve been offered a G5 Dual processor 1.8GHZ with 2GB of RAM from a friend of a friend. He’s asking $1,400.

I currently edit on Media 100, but I’m looking at making the switch to FCP. I own a Mac G4. 1.42 GHZ. I’d like to keep that system intact. I edit mostly off of Beta SP and Digital S (D9).

    My questions are:
    1. Is the G5 sufficient for the latest FCP software?
    2. If not, what should I be looing for?
    3. Is $1,400.00 too much for that G5? It has no monitor nor FCP software.

    Thanks for your help.

    1. Yes.

    3. Depends. But the price is bear the HIGH SIDE.

when you want a good idea of how much ANY used Mac is worth.

    Look here

(check near the bottom of the “chart” for a suggested used selling price.)

Like in buying a used car, everything is subject to “condition”, extra RAM, availability, warranty, etc.

I agree with Matte, the price seems high to me. Unless you get extras with the computer.

    Greg,

Look at it this way, you’re giving the old owner half of the ticket price to the newest Quad G5, which he will not do until some sucker comes along to reload him with the fresh ammo he needs. Without you, he’d be stuck in the land of the boring and unexciting. So, you’re doing him a huge favor. This should be your pitch.

If you plan on adding a video capture card make sure that computer has a PCI-X slot. Some of the low-end dual 1.8 models have no PCI-X. If you don’t plan on adding a capture card then there shouldn’t be a problem. $1400 is a bit high however. Check eBay for going rates on that model.
