Mac doesn’t see LaCie d2 drives
All my LaCie d2 drives aren’t being seen or mounted. What gives? I’m on a G5 PPC running Mac OSX 10.5.6. I downloaded the LaCie Updater Tool and still nada. Any ideas?

How are the drives connected?
Have you tried connecting the drives to other ports on the computer?
Have you tried connecting the drives to another computer?
Have you tried connecting other drives to the computer via the same connection?
Do they show up in disk utility?
Have you tried different cables?
Do they power on at all?With out knowing what all you have tried then we cant really say.

How are the drives connected? VIA FW (BOTH 400 & 800)
Have you tried connecting the drives to other ports on the computer? YES
Have you tried connecting the drives to another computer? NO I ONLY HAVE ONE COMPUTER
Have you tried connecting other drives to the computer via the same connection? YES
Do they show up in disk utility? NO
Have you tried different cables? YES
Do they power on at all? YES AND I CAN HEAR THEM SPIN UP BUT THEY DON’T MOUNT OR SHOW UP ON DISC UTILITY. THESE ARE ALL RELATIVELY NEW DRIVES BOUGHT FROM THE APPLE STORE. THEY CONTAIN ALL MY WORK!! -

If you know anybody at all with a mac call them up and ask if you can try connecting your drives to their computer.
If other drives show up on your computer then it is most likely an issue with the drive.
If the drives show up on another computer then it is most likely the computer, and you will want to have it looked at by a Apple Technician.There are no “technical solutions” to your “artistic problems”.

The problem is that none of my external drives are showing up no matter what I try. It seems to me it’s a LaCie firmware (?) update issue or somesuch, caused by not keeping up with the Mac OSX updates. They can’t ALL have gone bad, right?

It is unlikely that they all went out but it is posible. That is why you need try a completly different drive on your computer (one that has never been conected before). And also try your drives on another computer.
I’m betting your drives will show up on a different computer and that it is an issue with your computer.

Try shutting down your computer. Remove all cables from firewire and usb ports. Unplug power cable from computer. Let sit for 15 minutes. Plug everything back in. See if that resets the computer.

You are referring to a power management reset and not all macs reset the power management by resetting ungluing them

If your G5 is a tower then to do that reset you actually have to press a small button inside the machine.

No, I don’t know anyone with a Mac. Since I bought the drives at an Apple store near here, I can take them there and see if they mount.
I’ll keep you posted and thanks to both of you guys for your help!

In my humble opinion it could be a problem with both os X and Lacie, I know that Apple push Lacie drives, but Lacie (I’ve been told by a quite reliable source) don’t actually make the drives themselves, they make some of the components inside, but the drives they outsource from other companies.
If the company that they use for a particular drive is Seagate, then great, if it is China Newboy Hardrives, then it’s not so great. I have heard of a lot of people having trouble with Lacie externals, my advice would be switch to Seagate, I have a four year old 320gb Seagate which has had ciggarette ash and water dropped in the vents, it’s been dropped, trodden on and is still absolutely fine; there’s a new 1TB one out which has usb, fw and esata connections.
