Mac Avid to PC Avid
Hey – 1st time poster:
I recently cut my film on Avid Media Composer on a Mac and, now that I’m working full time cutting on a PC based Avid, I would like to know if it will be possible for me to load up onto a PC Avid, and work on, the file that was on the Mac Avid?
Main reason is I can’t get access the the Mac Avid now, but I can get my files and access to a full PC Avid suite with a Mojo. This is all with the outlook of doing a full High Definition master copy of my film by playing out onto a HDCAM deck.
Any help with this would be appreciated,

Projects and mediafiles are fully exchangeable between Macs and PC’s, as long as you don’t use exotic characters in file names and bin names, and as long as you kept your bin names short (or rename them prior to moving the files to the new system).
The safest way would be to copy all your media from an HFS+ drive to an NTFS drive. I use MacDrive on my PC, which enables the PC to read AND write to HFS+ formatted drives. I’ve even used them as media drives for offline stuff, but it is not recommended. On the Mac there’s a similar tool named Paragon, which allows OSX to read AND write to NTFS formatted disks (most current Macs will often be able to read NTFS formatted disks, but not write to them). I cannot imagine having to live without those two apps.
I often transfer projects and media between my studio PC’s and my Macs at home. Works all the time.

Great. Thanks for this info, I’ll need to give it a try and see if it works. It’s full HD 1080 footage we’re working with on this for a 20 minute long film, shot on a Sony HD750, with 2 shots of Panasonic P2 camera footage, and one shot from a Sony EX1 – XDCAM format. (worked on a very minimal budget!)
Just hoping that these files will happily transfer from one system to the other. I’ve also graded it using Magic Bullet on the Mac system, and the PC Avid I’d be transferring it to doesn’t have this, which may be a concern also.
Can only give it a shot and see what happens. If it all works it would be ideal as got a film festival deadline next week, otherwise will most likely have to fork out for an edit house to get it done on time, and who can afford that these days??

If you had Magic Bullet on the Mac system and you have not got it on the PC, it will only play back color corrected if you have those effects rendered and bring along all media (including those renders). You’ll not be able to change those particular effects, if they aren’t present on the system. If you extend or alter a shot during editing, part of it may not be rendered, and that will either play back as an unaffected clip, or it may play back as black, I think.
You could try to color correct with the Avid’s CC tool, or use another plugin that might be available on the new machine.
