I have a thread going over in the Apple FCP forum (link), that I wanted to get the Avid point of view on.

Briefly, I’m a FCP/AFX online editor and have a ProResHQ MOV file that I need to convert to a DNxHD MOV file so it can be injested on an Avid to be laid off to tape.

I don’t have read access to an Avid right now, but do have Mac Avid Codecs LE 2.3.2 installed.

Final Cut won’t export the file to DNxHD. It crashes.
Compressor will transcode the file to DNxHD, but it compresses the luma range to 10-92.
After Effects will render the file out to DNxHD, with accurate luma range.
(Details over in the other thread.)

So my main question to this forum is:
Is the compressed luma in the file from Compressor a bug in how Apple is interpreting the DNxHD file (but it will still correctly be interpreted on an Avid, –OR– is this a bug in how Compressor is creating the file and it will not be correctly be interpreted on an Avid.

That said, probably I’ll play it safe and convert the file using After Effects, but I would like to understand why the other obvious workflow paths aren’t working.

    Thanks in advance,
    John

My suspicion is that it is happening in compressor. But I need to play with it to give you actual confirmation.

Well, the issues are not limited to Compressor, given that trying to export the file in DNxHD from FCP completely crashes FCP.

I don’t want to hijack this forum with FCP issues, so let me refocus the question:

Avid editors, how would you recommend prepping a ProResHQ MOV file to be ingested into an Avid Adrenaline or Nitris for the sole purpose of being laid off to an HDCAM deck.

I only have limited time on the Avid, during which I want to maximize time laying off to tape, not prepping for ingest.

My own facility where I’m prepping only has the Avid Codecs LE, along with Final Cut and After Effects. No other Avid tools. 🙁
