Mac and sucky .mov files
Hey there, I recently purchased a macbook pro and am using adobe cs4 software.
I was contracted to make a commercial and the client will only accept .avi files.
They said they don’t accept .mov files anymore because of poor quality and strange issues with their PC based system.I must admit when viewing exported .mov files on quicktime pro I notice a significant quality drop.
I never had this issue on my PC.1. How can I export .avi files that look decent?
2. Why do my .mov files look like garbage?

AVI and MOV are software “wrappers” for a number of different CODECS. The CODECS and compression are largely what determines the quality of the file output. Without knowing which flavor of MOV you are using, it’s hard to say why the quality is low.
For a broadcast commercial spot your client should be requesting ‘uncompressed’ (even that is open to interpretation) files of some sort.
My suggestions: give them an AVI (uncompressed) and an MOV (PNG at 100% quality, = uncompressed), see if they have a preference. The PNG will be smaller; but it is lossless compression.

Format: quicktime (I don’t have the option to select .avi)
Preset: custom (this is the default I have tried other options)
Codec: DV/DVCPRO-NTSC
Quality at 100
frame rate 29.7
Field type: lower first
Aspect: D1/DV NTSC widescreen 16:9
I have selected render at maximum depth and optimize stillsOutput size is 53.4 Meg for a 15 second video
playback in premiere timeline is ok.
playback after export is very poor, in both quicktime and premiere…I’m not sure how to describe it…interlace issue?? junky lines…digital noise??

When I scrub the timeline in the export box it looks great.
I just can’t get a clean export.

Here’s my guess:
Open up the movie in QT Player. Try this:
Window -> Movie Properties
highlight “Video Track”
click “Visual settings” tab. Take a look at the lower right. Turn on the “high quality” checkbox (leave single field & de-interlace off).If you have QTPro, you can save these changes. For some reason, QT files will often default to “high quality” off.
