So, I’ve ripped a bunch of clips from various dvd’s in order to make a compilation dvd. I ripped them on a PC using a program called DVD Shrink, which allows me to rip just the section I want. I demuxed the resulting vob file with MPEG Streamclip into an m2v file and aiff file. Now my thinking, which was probably wrong, was that I could bring the files into FCP, add some transitions and lower thirds, export as a Quicktime mov, bring it into DVD SP and pop out a DVD that will be almost the same quality as the file that was on the original dvd. Well, it worked OK, it’s passable, but there is a noticeable loss of definition. So now I’m wondering; should I have decompressed the vob file into a DV format, edited it in FCP, and then recompress with Compressor? If so, which is the best format? Or is there actually a better way that bypasses FCP and goes right to DVD SP and still allows for transitions and lower thirds? Anybody like puzzles?

P.s. I tried exporting the 27 minute FCP sequence as Uncompressed 8-bit 4:2:2 and got a 32.46 GB file, which DVD SP, after an hour build(my almost dinosaur of a dual 1.8 G5), turned into a file 457 mgb too big for my dvd media? Curiouser and curiouser.

You can bring directly the .m2v to DVDSTPro. If the .m2v has been simply demuxed can’t be no loose of quality at all. You are using the same orignal files.
But If you want t re-edit the files, add transitions, lower-thirds, etc, you need to convert the .m2v to .mov.
Download (free) MPGSteamclip. Take your .m2v (or better the original VOB) and export as Apple8b Uncompress. Then take the .mov to FC.
With MPGSTreamclip you can select as well the shoots that you want to transcode.

..and always a big mess on top of the table.

If you use MPGStreamclip, don’t export as DV. You would end up with a DV Sequence. The kind of files for iMovie.
Will be better for you if you can get the original DVDs or VOB. Then you could export the .mov with the Video and Audio together.N o need to sync nothing.
