  • .M2TS to ProRes 422 conversion in Toast causing Gamma shift

Posted by Michael Macinnis on March 23, 2011 at 8:41 pm

I’ve been attempting to convert some .m2ts files to ProRes 422 in Toast 10 so that I can edit them in FCP but the resulting .mov files are producing a gamma shift. The converted files are a bit darker than the source files. Also, the converted files seem to be a tab more saturated than the source files but I haven’t been able to confirm if this is just a result of the gamma shift.

I’ve tried converting with Gamma Correction set to Automatic and to None but they both produce the same results.

Anybody know what’s going on here and if there is a possible solution? I’m open to using another method to convert the files to be FCP compliant if it can produce the results I’m looking for. I’d like to get as close to a 1:1 conversion if possible. Thank you.

    Hi Michael,
Toast is an application to make disks.
For transcoding or compression, there are other tools..

I don’t mind using Toast for these types of files. It has served me well in the past.

Don’t know what version of FCP and Quicktime you are using, but one thought might be to see if you have “Enable Final Cut Color Compatbility” checked in your Quicktime preferences.

Great, but if you have a problem like this one, I don’t know n which part of the Toast manual will you look for the fix.

This setting is to match the QT Player gamma (your computer screen gamma) to FCs 2.2 Gamma.
This was OK for Leopard and all the Mac os from before where Gamma was 1.8: Without “FC color compatibility” QT look too light.
But now with Snow Leopard, the native screen gamma is 2.2, so FC and QT should have the same gamma and the “FC Color Compatibility” is not necessary anymore.

Thanks to everyone for the replies. I should note that I am not on Snow Leopard, just Leopard version 10.5.8. My version of FCP is 7.0.2 and my version of QuickTime is QT Pro 7.6.6 (1632). I will try Eddie’s suggestion to see if it makes a difference. Also, Rafael, you mentioned that Toast should not be used to convert such a file. Do you have any recommendations on what would be a better program to convert the .m2ts file to a ProRes 422 .mov?

I just tried Eddie’s suggestion and it didn’t seem to resolve the issue. The converted ProRes 422 still came out slightly darker than the original. This has got me to thinking of the possibility that the original might not be displaying properly. I’m using a screen capture from VLC of the original and a screen capture from Quicktime of the ProRes file and comparing the two in Photoshop. VLC is the only thing on my system that I know of that will play the .m2ts file, so could the problem be with VLC not displaying the proper gamma?
