m2ts not recognised in Vegas 8 pro?!?
Posted by Dengse Nimo on January 2, 2008 at 10:47 pmI just bought Vegas 8 Pro to edit files from my SR1, and it doesn’t recognise the m2ts format.
I noticed a similar post from September, but no resolution was given – has anyone solved the problem or have we just wasted our money?Peter Dews replied 18 years, 1 month ago 5 Members · 6 Replies -

January 2, 2008 at 11:33 pmDid you copy the files with the supplied software from the camcorder to your hard drive, or did you copy them from the camcorder’s hard drive to your computer’s drive using Windows Explorer? I’m asking because I had a Panasonic SD5 briefly, which used SDHC card storage but it’s AVCHD just like yours, and if I remember correctly I had trouble with the files if I copied them straight from the card, but if I used the Panasonic supplied software to copy them to my computer and then open them from there (going through a lot of subdirectories because it’s a BMDV style structure) I was able to open them in Vegas with no problem. In fact I still have some of those .m2ts files in my hard drive and they open in Vegas Pro 8 just fine.

January 2, 2008 at 11:35 pmI second the request!
Who should we contact at Sony?I have a Canon HG10. The AVC files will import into VPRO8 and can be placed on the timeline, but when I try to play it from the timeline I get this error message:
“An error occured during operation. An Exception has occured”.
Then VPro8 quits. This happens with any mpg4 files (avc, M2ts, MTS etc). Could someone help please?
Thank you,

January 17, 2008 at 1:52 pmHi All – I just posted with the same problem. Weird thing is that I was opening and editing with m2ts files with movie studio platinum with no issues, but after adding Vegas pro 8b (and 8a) neither program will even import the files. UGH! It’s probably some simple setting somewhere . . .any ideas out there?

January 17, 2008 at 2:12 pmI contacted Sony regarding this issue.
First they replied to change the file name from MPG to VOB
WTF?!?!
I explained the whole situation and they give me this half arse answer.
Anyway wrote back that this answer was completely useless and now they suggest upgrading to Pro 8.0b.
So now answer to the problem. Unbelievable -

Whoever told you that obviously has no clue. I’m not an expert, but I know that VOB files are DVD mpeg2 files, which are program streams, as opposed to m2ts files, which are mpeg4 transport streams. But chances are you spoke with one of those guys in India or who knows where who have no clue about anything. I called a while ago about something related to my Sony Blu-Ray player and the guy gave me information about a firmware update that directly contradicted what was listed on the firmware update list of features.
Regardless of this, I keep wondering why some people have problems loading or playing AVCHD in Vegas, because I have files from the Panasonic SD5 that I had for a while, and they load and play, although they play at like 10 fps because it’s a very CPU intensive format, and I can hear the CPU fan going up a few seconds after I start playing them in Vegas. And while I don’t have the fastest computer in the world, it’s a 2.4 Ghz Intel Core2Duo with 4 GB of RAM, so I would say it’s a fast computer. It also might be that the implementation of the format in Vegas is not perfect. When I play the AVCHD files in the Panasonic HD writer software they play smoothly, which means the computer can handle the format, but Vegas is not fully optimized for it.

April 18, 2008 at 11:35 amHi this is the first time I have used a facility like this and wondered if this info might help with the use of m2ts type files
I own the Panasonic SD 1 and am very pleased with the result.I have tried out latest Nero 8.Power DVD . Video Studio 11 .But have recently removed these programs and installed Core AVC Codec and the wonderful media splitter Haali Media Splitter. These two programs allow m2t and AVCHD type files to be played back perfectly on the early version of Media Player. Power DVD realy struggled after about 8min of playback.
Editing with Sony Vegas pro 8 will accept m2ts type files and edits perfectly, great program also TMPGenc will work with these files if you install the above codecs,Hope this may be some use I creat my video render as an AVCHD file on Vegas and change file type manualy from m2ts to mpg this can be played easily on the Sony PS3
