  .m2t to .ts transport stream re-naming

  I need to make .ts file mpeg2 transport streams for presentation on a media player. Compressor will only let me make .m2t transport streams out of FCP. Can I just manually rename the extension to .ts as they are both mpeg2 transport streams or do I need to run them through VLC or MPEG Streamclip to change it? Is there a ‘technical’ difference between the .m2t and the .ts type file?
