M2T conversion-
Posted by Dennis Dean on November 14, 2010 at 5:43 pmIs M2T the same as M2TS? I need to convert M2T files recorded to a Sony HVR-MRC1 Memory Recording Unit on the back of a Sony HVR Z&U (set for 1080i 30).
Someone on the Cow had suggested Pavtube MTS/M2TS Converter – but the demo I downloaded only seems to give h.264 as a choice for HD QuickTime. And it also seems to be remarkably slow software.
I’m using FCP 6.06 – Does anyone know a better conversion method? I also have the video on tape.
Thanks!

November 14, 2010 at 6:07 pmHi Dennis,
You are right, Pavtube is not the tool.
Try ClipWrap. Aside of transcoding your files it has a very interesting “Re-wrap” function, but at least with my MTS files, makes FC crash.

November 14, 2010 at 7:13 pmHi Rafael – You’re saying ClipWrap – (or Pavtube) makes your FCP crash? What version are you running?
thanks!

November 14, 2010 at 9:34 pmHi Dennis,
I have ClipWrap 2.2
I can use it for transcoding to Prores, but are the re-wrapped files which makes crash FC.

November 15, 2010 at 1:42 amHi Rafael – I’m sorry , but I don’t know what rewrapped files are. Do you think I would be O-K transcoding M2T to ProRes 422 – or do those files become the rewrapped files you mentioned – and crash my system?
(Sorry – I’m not to technical).

November 15, 2010 at 8:53 amHi Dennis,
Go ahead and convert to Prores. No problem to edit.
Re-wrapping is very interesting because there is no rendering, no transcoding.
The MT2 file is just “re-packed” as QT and can be edit in FC.
This would be the faster and less destructive workflow, but at the moment doesn’t work with some AVCHD flavors (JVC, Canon?)

November 15, 2010 at 1:55 pmRafael – Used ClipWrap in a test run converting to ProRes, and rewrapping – which turned the M2T clips into Apple HDV. The latter clips are much smaller than their comparable ProRes clips, and play much smoother in Quick Time. They also look just fine. Do you think I’ll be o-k editing the Apple HDV versions? (Not sure why I wouldn’t be – but I know ProRes 422 is considered an editing codec.
Thanks!

November 15, 2010 at 2:29 pmit should be OK unless you try to edit with few layers, effects etc.
Make a test and if you see no problem, go on.
Re-wrappig is the faster and cleaner option.
Is just the original video/audio on a QT envelop.

January 13, 2011 at 12:47 pmThanks, Nanthan – I ended up using ClipWrap which does an excellent job – It was just a one-time thing as I purchased a camera that outputs QuickTime directly to reallllly speed up the work flow!
Best of the New Year
