  • LW-style motion buffers for adding post motion blur (AE7) ???

Posted by Eric Chard on April 28, 2012 at 11:08 pm

Lightwave outputs separate motion buffers for X and Y vectors.

Is it possible to utilize these buffers in AE so as to apply motion blur after 3D rendering? What would the pipeline be?

(And, I’d much prefer it not involve purchasing anything….)

AE comes with CC Force Motion Blur. The plugin does a decent job of adding motion blur just by analyzing the movement in the frame. This may be an option.
Here’s a good tutorial on that:

timewarp can add just the optical motion blur using…

    Matte Layer:
The layer to use as a matte for defining the foreground and background areas of the image. White areas in the matte represent the foreground, black areas represent the background, and gray attenuates between foreground and background.

Matte Channel The channel to use as a matte.

if you want to use vectors, you need reelsmart motion blur.

    What about CC Vector Blur?

“CC Vector Blur is not meant for this kind of stuff. It blurs perpendicular to an edge between two pixels, not along a given vector. The “vector map” merely defines a multiplier for the vector strength.-Mylenium”

I’d say your best bet is to render out matte passes and then timewarp add motion blur or frame blend with cc force motion blur. also this video talks about the best settings for cgi with cc force motion blur. It honestly doesn’t look that bad.

    I believe you are misinformed:

    from the dox:

“Vector blur uses maps to define a vector field along which the blur will take place. There are various ways to define the vector field. Vector Blur can blur in multiple directions, based on the values of another layer.”

    Type
Use this control to select how the vector field will be defined from the values in the chosen Vector Map. Choose one of the following options from the pop-up
menu.” —followed by descriptions of 5 different types of vector field maps

I’m more interested in using the correct vector maps that LightWave outputs than any kind of simulation or fakery. RSMB uses processed LW motion vector maps, but I’m looking for alternatives.
