LUT Jungle in Resolve
Dear colorist of creative cow,
I’m getting confused around the usage of LUT’s.
My company just bought a massive (windows) davinci resolve set.
And I’m trying to figure how to set up the right workflow.The current workflow is:
Native edit of RED footage in Premiere CS6
Export to .DPX
Import .DPX Resolve.Right now im confused how to use the LUT’s so here’s the main question:

As for the import LUT in Resolve, doest it have to be Rec709? (we are using it for broadcast)
And the output LUT also Rec709
Why do I have to use a output LUT if my input LUT is in the same color space?
Or do I have to use another input LUT before conforming it to Rec709—-
I hope somebody can make me understand… 🙂

Hello Jan,
You don’t need to export DPX from Premiere, you can use XML or EDL workflow and gain access to RED metadata in Resolve. If you are grading for Rec 709 there is no need for LUT. You can use output LUT if you want to go from REDLogFilm.Nikola Stefanovic

Using Resolve v9, import the XML from PP6 in Resolve to conform the source Red r3d files. Select in the Camera Raw, Red settings the correct color space, grade. If you are using a Rec. 709 calibrated monitor that’s going to be your grading color space. No need for additional luts.

Wow thanks for the fast response.
So I just need to set the monitor and export from Resolve to Rec 709.
The reason I work with a DPX export from Premiere CS6 is that there are some shots who have been trough post production.
(I added some stars in the sky and removed a leg from a tripod)
If I render these shot to .r3d they turn out grey.Now the timeline in Premiere consist of .r3d and post shots in Animation codec.
Still I got the feeling this is not the best workflow…

My best findings are, based on your comments.
Native edit .r3d in Premiere.
Post shots and time remapped shots as DPX on the timeline.XML export from Premiere.
And than working with a .r3d / DPX mixed timeline in Resolve?
Is this the best setup?
A straight XML with speedchanges ect are giving problems in Resolve.Any advice is welcome 🙂

I will try to match retimed shots in Resolve timeline and then export DPX for post in source mode.
