Luma mask for HDR footage
Hi
Was watching a color correction demo on a high end system used to combine and correct HDR footage from a RED camera.
I figure creating a luma mask(a mask which masks out a certain tonal range of an image) MUST be fairly easy to do in After Effects.Scenario 1
2layers
Bottom layer correctly exposed but highlites blown out
Toplayer underexposed to protect highlitesHow to mask the top layer so ONLY the highlites are revealed?
Scenario 2
also 2 layers
Bottom layer normal exposed
Top layer some effect applied but layer blend mode is ADD which blows out the highlitesHow to mask the top layer so ONLY the highlites are masked?

Duplicate the top layer. Apply Curves [link] or Threshold [link], and Minimax [link] or blurs as necessary to isolate and smooth the highlights, then use the effected duplicate of the top layer as a luma matte [link] for the uneffected version of the top layer.

Repeat the above, but use the top layer as an inverted luma matte.
Alternately, you could use the Extract effect [link], but I prefer the method above.
