    hello,
i plan to shoot an actor in a car, in my dark garage, and hope to use the surrounding black as a key. is this possible? i dont have a green screen large enough- and i want to composite moving footage later outside the car windows- think “sin city” – occasional headlights flashing the actor, a little wind= a cool processed shot?
as i have never done any compositing before this- i need the expert advice from you all.
    thanks

Try playing with ” Keying -> Color Range ” OR

    1. Take your footage with the guy in the car
    2. Create a green solid
    3. Do a mask all around the car
    4. Export in Quicktime
    5. And then you’ll be able to Key the green and add a road backside

    OR

Use the effect “Render -> Paint Bucket” and place the point on the Dark color on your footage. After that, export…and Key the color you have choosen with the Paint Bucket Effect.

    OR

You don’t need a Green Screen you know, any color, as long at it’s uniform will work. Try a blanket or something, anything that’s large enough to fit in your window.

    OR 🙂

Send me your footage at Tangerin01@hotmail.com if you need extra help, I’ll be glad to help you.

    Cheers.

That would be bad. First of all if you are going to have a shot that has proper levels, you’ll have a lot more black than just your BG. I’d do your shot outside on a much longer lens (which minimizes the BG size) and use a small bit of greenscreen behind the actor. Let the sun light it.

Even if you were using a white BG to key, Luma keys don’t make very good mattes, They are okay, but not great by a long shot.

thanks for the very detailed reply! great help-
as i wrote to Chris, regarding compositing (like “sin city”): my car scenes all happen at night- i am losing good weather here- so, i may have to find a garage or warehouse to shoot the “driving” stuff. But, if the inside of the car is fairly dark- and i hit the actor with some edge lighting and maybe a single hard, high key (again, like the great noir lighting in sin city)- and place a couple green tarps outside the windows- do you think i’ll be able to use them as my “green screens” ? or does it become a nightmare because there isn’t enough light on the tarps?
as you can tell by my post- i am new to this process- but hopeful! i’m hoping with a little expert guidance from you pros- i can advoid making huge mistakes.
    thansk again
