LTO-7 with a Mac
Posted by Christian Zorzi on December 29, 2018 at 11:03 pmFor a Quantum LTO-7 drive I’m looking for a reliable SAS HBA to be used in a Sonnet Echo Express SEL box. Seems that the Atto H1280 is the way to go. Any other recommendations? TIA

December 29, 2018 at 11:24 pmwhat computer are you using ?
A Win 10 PC ? An old Mac Pro ?If you have a thunderbolt Mac, you use this –
https://www.mlogic.com/products/mtape-thunderbolt-lto-7or this –
https://www.mlogic.com/products/mtape-thunderbolt-lto-7instead of your Quantum, you should get this –
https://magstor.com/collections/magstor-sas-tape-drives/products/magstor-lto7-hh-sas-external-desktop-tape-drive-6tb-ltfs-sas-1hl7i-lto-7and for your external LTO 7, you can just use this as the host card, for both Mac and Win 10 PC, if you don’t have thunderbolt
https://www.atto.com/products/adapters/sas-sata/6gb-pcie-30/ESAS-H680-000and you should read this post, with feedback from YoYotta, and Magstor –

December 30, 2018 at 10:44 amDear Bob, thanks for your answer.
I didn’t think that my post was that unclear.
Looking for SAS HBA to use this box:
https://www.sonnettech.com/product/echoexpressseltb3.html
So we’re talking about
MAC > TB3 > SAS > LTO
The external Quantum LTO-7 SAS drive is already sitting here.

December 30, 2018 at 3:56 pmYou can use either the ATTO H680 or H1280 inside the Sonnet chassis, both work well with LTO and LTFS.
More details here on our website.

December 31, 2018 at 3:02 pmI have two of these – Sonnet Echo Express SEL – one Thunderbolt 2 and the other Thunderbolt 3.
In one, I have an Atto SAS H680 and in the other an Atto SAS H1280.This Sonnet model is a ‘low-profile’ PCIe card adapter, so make sure you have the low profile bracket with the SAS card. If you’re buying a new H680 or H1280, then it comes with a low profile adapter in the box.
And after you finish installing the card with the low profile bracket, keep the normal height bracket safely, just in case you need to later install it in a full height expander.Your LTO drive may have shipped with a cable but that’s likely to be a SFF-8088 to SFF-8088 cable. That will work with the Atto H680, but for the H1280 you’ll need a SFF-8644 to SFF-8088 cable to hookup to the SAS LTO drive.
