LTO-7 Pricing hints start to emerge
Hi Folks,
IBM has dropped the first shoe in LTO-7 pricing by announcing their LTO-7 media pricing.
IBM LTO-7 MEDIA INFORMATON AND PRICING
$7,428 gets you a 20 pack.
That’s $371.40 per tape in 20+ quantity and around $400 per tape in single tape quantity at full retail U.S. pricing. While we don’t have locked-in LTO-7 drive pricing yet, the insiders are whispering about 2x the current pricing of LTO-6 for a drive. This also means that there will be no downward pressure on LTO-6 and LTO-5 pricing, so don’t hold out expecting to get a good deal on LTO-6 when LTO-7 ships. In fact, I strongly suspect that LTO-6 will be the mainstream model point for many years from what we are seeing.
As an aside, we really don’t see LTO-7 as competing with LTO-6, but rather competing with Oracle’s T10000C/D technologies. The capacity and performance points are much more closely related.
Oracle StorageTek T10000C Tape Technology
We may be wrong in the drive pricing, but I don’t believe by much. I’ll keep updating things as we get more news.
