LTFS and Mac Pro Setup.
We are looking at getting an external HP 3000 LTO-5 and hook it up to one of our Mac Pro’s via an ATTO H380 card and archive with LTFS. Just wanted to check and see if anyone has had any experience with this setup or similar? We are also looking at the Quantum drive as well.
Are there any quarks, work arounds, ect?

The big quirks are that there isn’t 64 bit kernel support and the Finder isn’t “tape-aware”.
You may have to boot your Mac Pro into 32 bit mode depending on its age. Also, the Finder often gets tripped up on LTFS because it times out waiting for a copy to finish, and all the background Spotlight and .DS_Store stuff is bad news on LTFS.
Boot to 32 bit kernel and interact with tapes via the command line instead of the Finder for better results. You can also look at BRU PE, they recently added LTFS support.

We brought up a Mac Pro with LTFS here at Cache-A as a reference system. It definitely was not a project for the technically challenged. I can’t speak for the IBM version, but the HP install required a few tweeks beyond the instructions (creating a log file in your Library, changing some permissions). Also be aware you’ll be using Terminal to launch and unmount, and maybe run file system checks and so on.
Advertisement: we’re now shipping our version 2.0 software with LTFS included. We have built-in workflows that address these issues and all the other well known LTFS limitations (like ordering files for large restores, a major inherent limitation of LTFS with Finder or Windows Explorer).
