Lower thirds
Is there a way to create my own lower thirds so I can use the title edit and add text into it on the fly?

Easy. See page 30 of the PDF User Guide, Creating New Templates. There’s a link to some examples and an XML file. Basically you create the graphic (png with alpha) and edit the XML file to define where the text would appear and its default style.
