Low-cost solution for Hi–Speed video
First, I want to say how much I enjoy the forum and all of the creative knowledge that’s available to us.
I am doing a personal project for a friend and it requires hi-speed video. I’ve looked at the Phantom HD https://www.simvideo.com/rental_product.aspx?pid=334 but that seems like a lot of camera (money) to rent. Is there a prosumer or low-cost solution to achieve hi-speed photography? I would just need the camera for a day’s rental. I tried shooting the subject with my own prosumer cam and manipulating in post but that is unsatisfactory. The subject is a close-up of a golf ball being hit off a tee. BTW, I live in Wisconsin and my big-city choices for rental are Minneapolis, Madison and maybe Chicago.
I appreciate whatever suggestions you all might have.

Does it need to be HD? If not, you can rent a SD high speed camera directly from Vision Research, the company that makes the Phantom as well as other rental houses. Also, I’ve used the Red at it’s top speed and the footage looked great but it won’t get near the speed of a Vision Research camera. Part of the reason the Phantom costs so much is the specially trained operator you need to go with it.

Wow, learn something new every day. I knew the Phantom was developed by Vision Research, but thought it ended up being a proprietary Panavision product… I didn’t know it was available elsewhere.
At what frame rate are you needing to shoot?

Thanks for the responses. No, it does not have to be shot in HD and I’m still unsure of the frame rate but somewhere between 600 and 1,000fps should be sufficient.
And to save costs, I would want a camera that I could operate myself; I’m a corporate videographer and a still photographer.

Ah… ok. I was thinking that shooting high-speed film might be a better option, as there are several high-speed cameras too choose from. Also some will, the vast majority of them won’t shoot frame rates anywhere near as high as 1K.
Since standard-def is sufficient, I’d probably consider one of the various Vision Research cameras as Rick suggested.
