  • Low-cost display for producer/clients?

Hi – not sure which forum this fists best, so this seemed as good a place as any. I’m looking for a new display to use for my client/producer station in my editing suite. Nothing fancy, but needs to look good so they can see what I’m doing without looking over my shoulder. Thinking just a nice TV could suffice. Needs to have HDMI/1080p but would enjoy something that can handle various frame rates well. The unit I have not (a old Vizio) drops out at certain frame rates. Size can be anywhere from 19″ – 27″. Anyone have any recommendations other than just grabbing something randomly off Amazon or Costco?

    Thanks much.

    How would you feed it?

DVI/DisplayPort, etc from display card. or video out of an AJA/BMD?Bluefish/Matrox card? (feeding from the display card, or cloning an output from your display card would help with the framerate issues I would think…)

Sometimes smaller is a bit better as images look sharper…but it depends on the client.

If you were thinking about a touch above a consumer TV, JVC’s Pro LCD Panels impress me for the money…but it’s probably 4x a nice consumer panel.

I’ll be feeding it with HDMI from a BMD Ultrastudio Mini. I’d like to keep the display under $300.

I tried an HDMI solution too. One thing to keep in mind is the delay in HDMI processing. If you monitor your audio/video using outputs other than BMD there is a slight processing delay. It is enough that my clients thought there was a lip-sync issue. I eventually converted all back to HD-SDI.

Howdy Ed. We met in SLC about15 years ago when I worked at STS Video Productions as an editor. I came over to check out the facility where you worked. It had lots of character as I remember. Just wanted to say hi.

Yep, depending on the monitor chosen, this can be really bad. A professional monitor can generally be good with HDMI as the processing is much better.

For $300 or under, I would just go down to your local electronics store and see what looks good to you. As long as you have a true reference monitor that you know is accurate for your own color, the “pretty monitor” for the client doesn’t matter so long as you can dial it in pretty close to what your reference looks like.

We run 42 and 50″ Panasonic Pro Plasmas in our shop. Last time I looked I think they were getting sub $700 now.
