Does anybody have any recommendations, 1080i 720p 0r 720pn when using the HVX for a low budget feature which format provides the most options and least problems, if the end product will be cut on FCP?

    Thanks,
    Darryl

Most folks I know these days are shooting 720p 24pn for FCP.

Thanks, is there much drop off between 720p and 720 pn? I assume because of the increased recording capacity that it would be significant. Is that true?

Drop off how? They are the same thing only different ways of storing the frames on the cards. 24pN gives you exactly 24 frames per second native with no 3:2 pulldown and no wasted space.

One last silly question. I’m used to shooting on a beta cam sx, I’m trying to catch up to this new camera. When is it an advantage to shoot in 720p mode at 4 minutes on a 4 gig card when you can get 10 minutes at 720pn. I don’t see any reason to shoot in 720p. What am I missing?

Lastly, I heard that the Firestore is due to be shipped the last week of April. Have you heard any rumors of problems? Are their any rumors of alternate products on the horizon that might be worth waiting for.

Look at FCP 5.1 will work with 1080 24pA footage now.
    For a feature I would think having a 1080 24p master
would be the way to go. But it all depends on what you
are trying to achieve. The 720 24pN mode is quality wise
the same as 720 24p. The 720 24p mode shoots in over 60fps
mode. The 720 24pN mode only records 24 fps so thats why
you can get 10 min per 4 gig card. The 1080 24p mode
will only give you 4 min per 4 gig card. I know many
shooters have successfully up converted a 720p master
with good results. But for a film stick to either
    720 24pN or 1080 24pA.

By shooting it in 720 pn mode, you’ll be able to do speed effects also, which unfortunately can’t be done in 1080.

Couldn’t you just shoot in 1080p24A and when you want to do speed effects drop down to 720p for those scenes. Then upconvert those scenes to 1080p24A for the master.
