  • Low audio levels when exported to DVDA

I seem to always be jumping through hoops to get audio with suffient volume exported from Vegas to DVDA. I can have a project in Vegas with excellent audio and almost full peaks on the timeline, but when I export that audio as an AC3 file for a DVD, it shows up with very small peaks in DVDA. I have to go back to Vegas, double-up the audio tracks, crank up the audio envelope, and slide the volume slider way up, and normalize the export to -10 dB rather than the default -27 dB just to get barely acceptable audio levels when it gets into DVDA. I must be doing something wrong. Any thoughts?

When you encode your AC3 file, set the Dialog normalization to -31db and Preprocesssing>line mode profile to none.

Gary, can you explain why Vegas is setup the way it is, and why the settings you suggest make a difference? I know DVD’s have a lower volume and that, but the default just seems way low. I’ve been cranking mine up to -31 as you suggest, but am still not sure if that’s a good thing to do?

Worked like a charm. Much appreciated.

Yes, Sony suggests that you do.
