I want to make a lot of cubes in after effects 6.5, but when I try, it wants an unreasonable amount of ram with just 10 cubes.
The thing I was going for was to put video on the face of the cubes that would turn on and off over time, so I made the ten cubes in 10 comps, and put those in one comp.
I’m sure there is a better aproach to this, just not sure how.

Yes, there is. It’s called a 3D program. ;O). I’m not sure what you are exactly trying to do, but the most improvement can be gained by reducing the sizes of the 3D layers, or more specificly the resolution of the footage you are using. I’m presuming you are using HD footage and on 10 cubes with each side mapped individually that sums up to quite a bit of RAM usage. Unless you really have a cube in full frame, there is no point in using that large resolution on all of them. Create some proxies/downsized files for the more distant cubes. The filtering of the 3D layers will still make it look good enough and in addition you can further use some depth blur to disguise the fact of the resolution being lower. It will also help to minimize flickering. And yes, if you know your way around 3D programs or know someone who does, give it a try there. It will be so much easier and look even better…
